Why Are My Emails Queued?

Why are my emails queued? Usually because your email app can't reach the mail server yet, not because anything is wrong with the email itself. Here are the causes in Gmail and Outlook, how to fix each one, and when a queue is a sign of a bigger deliverability problem.

Why Gmail queues emails

"Queued" appears in the Gmail app when a message is waiting in the Outbox to be sent.

Weak or no connection

The Gmail app holds messages in the Outbox until it has a stable connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or turn airplane mode off and on.

Phone storage is full

With too little free space the app can't prepare the message. Free up storage, then open the Outbox and refresh.

Large attachments

Gmail's attachment limit is 25 MB. Bigger files are turned into Google Drive links, and that upload can stall on a slow connection.

Background or data restrictions

Battery saver or blocked background data can stop the app finishing the send once you leave it. Allow background data for Gmail.

Out-of-date app or stuck sync

Update the Gmail app, clear its cache, or turn account sync off and on again, then restart the phone.

Sending limit reached

If you hit Gmail's daily sending limit, new messages can't go out until the limit resets, usually within 24 hours.

Why Outlook queues emails

In Outlook, queued emails sit in the Outbox instead of moving to Sent.

Working offline

In classic Outlook, check that Work Offline on the Send / Receive tab is switched off.

Large attachments

Messages over your account's size limit sit in the Outbox. Share big files as a link instead.

Password or sign-in problems

A changed password or expired sign-in stops Outlook from connecting to the server. Sign out and back in.

Add-ins or a corrupted message

A faulty add-in or a damaged message can block the whole Outbox. Move the stuck message to Drafts and try again.

When queued emails mean a deliverability problem

A message stuck on your phone is almost always a local problem. It's different when your sending tool or mail server reports messages as queued or deferred again and again. That usually means receiving servers are slowing you down on purpose, often because of a sudden spike in volume, a poor sender reputation, or a listing on a blacklist.

If volume or reputation is the cause, slow down and rebuild trust gradually with an email warmup tool.

Queued Emails: Common Questions

To fix a queued email, first check your internet connection and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Then open the Outbox and pull down to refresh. If it's still stuck, update the email app, clear its cache, free up storage, and remove or shrink large attachments. Finally, check whether you've hit a daily sending limit.

Usually, yes. Most queued emails send automatically once the cause clears, for example when your connection returns or the app syncs again. If you've hit a daily sending limit, the message waits until the limit resets. An email that stays queued for hours probably needs a manual fix, such as refreshing the Outbox or removing a large attachment.

In the Gmail app, open the menu, go to the Outbox and pull down to refresh, which retries the send. If that doesn't work, open the message, copy its content, discard it and send it again as a new email, ideally after reconnecting and removing any very large attachment. On a computer, check the Outbox in Gmail on the web.

Gmail shows Queued when the app has accepted your message but can't send it yet. The most common reasons are a weak connection, full phone storage, a large attachment that's still uploading, background data restrictions, or a sync problem in the app. Hitting your daily sending limit can also hold new messages back.

Emails get stuck in the Outlook Outbox when Outlook can't reach your mail server or can't process the message. Check that Work Offline is switched off, that your password and sign-in are current, and that the message isn't over your attachment size limit. A faulty add-in can also block sending, so try starting Outlook without add-ins.
