Email Header Analyzer

Paste any message into this free email header analyzer to see whether it passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC, where it was delayed, and how spam filters scored it.

Headers are analyzed in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to Mailwarm or stored.

How to get email headers in Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail

Copy the original headers, then paste them above

Gmail

Open the email, click the three-dot menu next to Reply, and choose Show original. Click Copy to clipboard.

Outlook on the web and new Outlook

Open the email, click the three-dot menu, then choose View and View message details (or View message source).

Classic Outlook for Windows

Open the email in its own window, go to File, then Properties. Copy everything in the Internet headers box.

Apple Mail

Select the email, then choose View, Message, Raw Source (Option-Command-U). Copy the lines above the message body.

How to read the results

SPF, DKIM and DMARC

All three should say pass. A fail tells you which record to fix, using the SPF, DKIM or DMARC checker.

Delivery path

Hops are listed from the sending server to your inbox. A delay of more than a few minutes points to throttling, greylisting or a queue.

Spam filter headers

X-Spam headers and Microsoft's SCL show how the receiving filter scored the message. SCL 5 or higher means it was treated as spam.

Return-Path vs From

If the domains differ, SPF can't align for DMARC, so DMARC relies on DKIM passing for your From domain.

Found a failure? Fix it with the SPF checker, DKIM checker or DMARC check, and make sure your IP passes a blacklist check.

Email Header Analyzer: Common Questions

Everything you need to know about reading email headers

A message header analyzer turns the raw technical headers of an email into a readable report. It shows whether the message passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC, lists every server it passed through with the delay at each hop, and surfaces spam filter scores, so you can see why an email was delayed, rejected or sent to spam.

The Microsoft Message Header Analyzer is Microsoft's own tool for reading email headers, available as an Outlook add-in and a web page. It is built around Exchange and Microsoft 365 diagnostics. This email header analyzer reads the same headers, including Microsoft's SCL and antispam fields, and works with mail from any provider.

Yes, this message header analyzer is safe to use because it runs entirely in your browser. The headers you paste are never sent to Mailwarm or stored anywhere. Headers can contain email addresses, IP addresses and server names, so avoid pasting them into tools that upload them to a server unless you trust the provider.

To check a message header, open the original source of the email in your mail client and copy the header section. In Gmail choose Show original, in Outlook open the message details or properties, and in Apple Mail view the raw source. Paste the headers into the analyzer above to read them.

SCL stands for spam confidence level, a score Microsoft 365 and Exchange add to every incoming message. A value of -1 means filtering was skipped, for example for a safe sender. 0 and 1 mean the message isn't spam. 5 and 6 mean spam, and 9 means high-confidence spam, which usually goes to junk or quarantine.
